Dilemma Of A Chicago Sports Fan

World Series 2006I make it fairly clear in the header of my blog and links section that I am a tried and true Chicago Cubs baseball fan. Overall I’ve been a Chicago sports fan since I was a very young, supporting all the Chicago major sports teams. That is all but one. The Chicago White Sox.

For those not from this area or not a sports fan, the reason I cannot be a White Sox fan is, well… I’m a Cubs fan, you can’t be both! Now comes the dilemma: Sunday night the White Sox won the American League Championship for the first time in 46 years, advancing to the World Series. This is a big deal because no Chicago baseball team has been to the World Series since the Sox were last there, and neither have not won it since 1917. Needless to say its long overdue for either Chicago baseball club.

Amidst all of the hoopla, I found myself happy that a Chicago team is going to the World Series, but at the same time, not wanting them to win it all. Crazy? Selfish? I suppose. If there were only one baseball team here, there would be no dilemma. But I’m loyal to the Cubbies and will not jump on a bandwagon just because the Sox could make history. In the end, if the Sox win the World Series, I will be happy a Chicago team finally won. However I certainly wish it were the Cubs instead.

I so agree. All Chicago sports fans are not created equal. I thought for a bit- Yay, Chicago is going somewhere! But then I remembered my latest and final experience at the White Sox park, where a Southsider yelled in my ear, “Cubs suck ***! Cubs suck ***!” just to be irritating.

What if the Sox win??? Oh dear. Rational southsiders, run for your lives. Cubs fans would have celebrated their heads off, yes, but the Sox fans will probably ignite things and hurt cops. Ugh.

Sooooo… any thoughts regarding the week’s events? Or is your silence a sign of your indifference?
